DEFINITION AND CLASSIFICATION:
- Demography is a statistical study of the distribution and characteristics of human populations.
- It started with the study of mortality by John Graunt in the 16th century. He noticed statistical regularities.
- The development of insurance and pension schemes increased awareness of demographic variables.
- National population censuses and civil registers of births and deaths made by governments for administrative and legal purposes became sources of accurate demographic data.
