  • Strengths relate to opportunities; Weaknesses relate to threats
  • Internal threats worse than external threats; internal weaknesses open the door to external threats
  • Internal threats: leadership crisis (diseases of leaders and followers)

Diseases of followers:
  • Hypocrisy
  • Insincerity
  • Bad advice to leader
  • Disloyalty
  • Disobedience
  • Excessive veneration of the leader.

Solution of the leadership crisis by purification of the self, tazkiyat al nafs 1
  • The essence of a person and personality is the nafs and not the physical body. 
  • The states of the nafs in increasing grades of perfection are: nafs ammarah (inclination to evil), nafs lawamah (conscience), and nafs kamilat (perfection) 
  • Nafs kaamilat manifests in 5 ways: nafs mulhamah (inspired); nafs qanu’ah(content), nafs mutma’inna(calm), nafs radhiyah(accepting), and nafs mardhiyat(accepted).

  • Tazkiyat is based on ikhlaas (commitment), sidq(truth), istislam(surrender), and  tadharu'u
  • Tazkiyat is answering the call of Allah by sticking to the straight path, renouncing materialism, constant vigilance against shaitan. 
  • Tazkiyat can be achieved by dhikr, isti'adhat, istighfar, tasbiih, tahmiid, tahliil, dua, 
  • Tazkiyat can be achieved by physical ‘ibadat: salat, saum, and  infaq.
