Presentation at the Vice Chancellors’ Summit on the theme ‘The challenges of sustaining Islamic Universities in secular multi-religious settings: West African Perspective’ held in Abuja Nigeria on July 27, 2019.

1.0 VALUE ADDED EDUCATION (VAE) 

• Thought: reform, reconstruction, enhancement, innovation, and creativity.

• Knowledge: integration, purposiveness, and comprehensiveness.

• Personal development: tarbiyah, character-building, life skill development.

2.0 PRE-REQUISITES FOR SOCIAL CHANGE AND REFORM (TAJDID & ISLAH): THOUGHT REFORM (ISLAH AL FIKR) AND REFORM OF KNOWLEDGE (ISLAH AL MA’ARIFAH) 

• The rise, fall, and renewal of the Muslim civilization in the Middle East and North Africa. 

• The West African Islamic revival of the 18-19th centuries: Shehu Uthman dan Fodio. 

• The European renaissance due to thought and knowledge reform and subsequent growth of European scientific, technological, economic, and political power. 

• The Asian renaissance based on adding local values: Japan, Kore a, China, Singapore. 

3.0 CHALLENGES TO NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: WITHIN THE CURRICULUM 

• Critical thinking, innovation, and creativity: change of methodology of teaching.

• Integration of Knowledge (IOK): adding Qur’anic moral values to the disciplines by producing and teaching integrated teaching materials.

• Purposiveness: the centrality of the umma and reality of revival. 

4.0 CHALLENGES TO NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: EXTRACURRICULAR 

• Concept of comprehensive education and development of life skills.

• Self-learning of Qur’an and sunnat in the usra/study circle program.

• Marriage, parenthood, and child upbringing.

• Entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
