DEFINITION AND CLASSIFICATION
• Engineering applies scientific knowledge to practical problems in order to benefit humans. While scientists seek to know engineers seek to do. Engineering essentially is built around three sciences: mathematics, physics, and chemistry. It involves research to find new ideas and technologies, development of solutions to problems, designing machines and instruments to solve the problem, construction of machines and structures, production, operational control of engineering processes, and management of the engineering enterprise.
• Sub-disciplines of engineering: civil engineering deals with roads and buildings. Mechanical engineering deals with machines. Electrical and electronic engineering. Chemical engineering.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• Engineering is as old as human history. Ancient civilizations constructed, houses, temples, and machines, etc.
BASIC PRINCIPLES AND PARADIGMS
• Engineering is a practical problem-oriented discipline.
• Two resources are used by engineers: materials and energy. Engineering seeks to solve practical problems at the lowest monetary and social cost.
