HISTORY AND CLASSIFICATION:
- Grammar is the study of the rules governing the use of a language. These rules are known intuitively by native speakers of the language.
- Sub-divisions of grammar include: phonology (sounds of the language), morphology (how words are formed), syntax (the way in which words are arranged), and semantics (meanings of words).
- Study of grammar serves the purpose of standardizing and preserving the purity of the language Formal rules of grammar may not reflect the actual usage of a language by the general public.
