HISTORY AND CLASSIFICATION:

  • Art uses imagination for esthetic purposes.
  • The sub-disciplines of art are literature, visual arts, graphic arts, plastic arts, decorative arts, performing arts, music, and some forms of architecture.
  • Literature is poetry, drama, and storytelling.
  • Visual arts are painting, drawing, and sculpture Performing arts are theater, dance, and music.
  • Literature refers to the use of language with an artistic creative flavor. It may be prose or poetry. It may be oral or written. Printing and electronic media have helped the growth of literature. The content and style of literature tend to reflect the social environment. Literature can be an epic, lyric, satire, fiction, or drama.
  • Popular art is an art that is appreciated by ordinary people who do not need to have a sophisticated ability to appreciate art. The development of television and other means of mass communication have brought this art within reach of many ordinary people Popular art changes rapidly with changing trends. Popular art can be literature, music, dance, or theater. Popular literature takes the forms of romance, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and comedy. Popular music changes quite rapidly mainly due to technological developments. The popular theater has largely developed into the movie industry whose main objective is entertainment without serious intellectual content.
