Introduction:
The standards of ethical medical practice are rising rapidly. Practitioners especially at the consultant level need to enhance their ethical knowledge and ethical reasoning skills. This is an advanced course designed for those who have already gone through the basic course. The number of course participants will be 20-22.

Goals:
The course has 2 goals: (a) enhance ethical knowledge based on the most recent research and good practice (b) enhance ethical reasoning skills.

Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will be able to
1.     Identify and define ethical issues / problems in a given clinical situation
2.     Consider all possible alternative solutions to the problem
3.     Make decisions that conform to the state of the art ethical principles, the laws and customs of KSA

Themes: Practical Issues in Health Care
1.     Ethical reasoning: theory and practice
2.     Consent and Informed Consent: methods and pitfalls
3.     Treatment decisions for children and incapacitated patients
4.     Truth-telling and disclosure of surgical risk
5.     Mental illness and personality disorders:
6.     Violent and abusive patients
7.     Issues in assisted reproduction: IVF
8.     Issues in artificial life support
9.     Issues in genetic counseling and genetic testing
10.                        Research involving pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers
11.                        The ethics committee: roles and methods


Teaching Methods:
1.  Interactive lectures.
2.  Small and large group discussions.
3.  Role play (Practical applications) on simulated patients or scenarios.
4. Assignments.

Language of instruction:
English and Arabic languages.
