Presentation to Year 3 medical students Faculty of Medicine King Fahad Medical City Riyadh by Professor Omar Hasan Kasule Sr.

WHAT IS PHYSICIAN EMPATHY?
·         Physician empathy assures patient enablement or empowerment[1].
·         Empathy is a moral attribute that involves defined understanding of the inner processes going on in the patient concerning his illness and related problems[2].
·         More empathetic physicians had more satisfied patients[3].
·         The Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy was a special tool developed and validated to quantify empathy among physicians[4],[5],[6] and medical students[7],[8].

FACTORS OF EMPATHY
·         Financial incentives by enabling the physician to spend more time with the patient were found to increase empathy[9].
·         Specific training increases physician expression of empathy[10].
·         The practice environment affects expression of empathy for example emergency physicians were perceived by patients to have lower empathy expression[11].
·         Reducing the stress level of physicians helps enhance their expression of empathy[12].
