Presentation to Year 3 students at the Faculty of Medicine King Fahad Medical City Riyadh by Professor Omar Hasan Kasule Sr

ESTABLISHING RAPPORT 1
  • Rapport was found to be established in the first minute of the interaction of medical students with standardized patients[1].
  • Rapport was related to other covariates like facial expressions of emotion, self-reported attention to one's own emotions, peer ratings of sensitivity, communication behaviors of the medical student and standardized patient, and positive impressions and satisfaction[2].

ESTABLISHING RAPPORT 2
  •  Non-verbal communication has an important role in establishing rapport with patients even those who are deaf mute[3].
  • Research studies on physician patient communication in the acute care setting are difficult because physicians are busy with their urgent clinical duties[4]..
  • Rapport can be improved by research and training. A pilot training program showed increase of physician rapport in all three dimensions: knowledge, attitudes and behavior[5].
