1.0  RESEARCH: WHAT?

  • Data collection and analysis to generate generalizable knowledge.
  • Qualitative and quantitative.
  • Observational and experimental.
  • Difference between research and a quality project.
  • Nursing research is a priority.

 

2.0 RESEARCH: WHY?

  • Find better treatments: more effective, cheaper, fewer adverse effects, easier to use, locally relevant.
  • Improve clinical effectiveness… researchers use up-to-date knowledge.
  • Rankings.

 

3.0 RESEARCH: TOPIC

  • Start with immediate areas of professional engagement.
  • Start with problems that need solutions.
  • Can join a research team with similar interests.

 

4.0 RESEARCH: HOW?

  • Problem.
  • Hypothesis: educated guess.
  • Variables: independent (causes), dependent (outcome), confounding/effect modification.
  • Study design: observational (cross-sectional, case-control, follow-up) and experimental (clinical trial, community trial).
  • Data collection: questionnaire, existing records, measurement.
  • Data analysis: descriptive and analytic.

 

5.0 RESEARCH: PROBLEMS

  • Originality and the problem of plagiarism
  • Authorship problems: ghost, friend, boss
  • Data: cooked, Inaccurate, incomplete
  • Publication: must get IRB approval
