PROTECTING YOUR IDEAS
- Document the moment you get a new research idea.
- Share the information with a potential witness.
- Communicate in writing with heads of department, research committee etc.
- If you fear theft, communicate minimum information - ? Disjointed
GETTING PERMISSION TO COLLECT DATA
- IRB approval id from ethical point of view and does not give automatic approval to collect data.
- The head of the hospital, department, or unit has to give permission to collect data.
- Brief written and dated request should be submitted to get permission to collect data.
- The department or hospital from which data is collected can ask the researcher to share the research report for their benefit. This can be made a condition for approving data collection.
DISCUSSING RESEARCH IDEAS WITH COLLEAGUES
- Secrecy: advantages and disadvantages.
- Openness: advantages and disadvantages.
- Disclosure: full or partial.
WHO IS AN AUTHOR?
- Significant intellectual contribution: design, execution, and write up of the research. Record the contribution of everyone in the process of researching.
- Research assistants.
- Data managers and analysts.
- Boss as a co-author.
- Peers as a co-author (scratch my back I scratch yours).
IF YOU LEAVE KFMC
- You must assign a new PI if you do not the HOD will.
- If you do not assign a new PI you have to return all research papers to IRB for storage.
- You do not lose your intellectual / authorship rights when you leave KFMC.
